Switzerland County
Switzerland County is true to its name. Driving through its scenic terrain, the small mountains, tall hills and rolling valleys make the viewer wonder if they’re still in Indiana or somehow transported to the Swiss Alps in Europe. Vevay, the county seat, became the site of America’s first commercial winery.
Vevay’s founder, Francis DuFour had worked on his family’s vineyard and learned the process of winemaking hoping to establish a flourishing winery in America.
Today, Switzerland County still pays tribute to its viticultural beginnings with an annual wine festival held each summer featuring local wines, grape stomping, music, rides, and other attractions. Switzerland County is currently the home of the Belterra Casino resort, which includes a world class championship golf course.
